In this paper, we analyze the electroacoustic piece Cyclone composed in 1983 by José Augusto Mannis. Our analysis utilizes Denis Smalley’s theories of spectromorphology (1986; 1997), Chion’s method of naming sound objects (2009), and spectrogram analysis of the recording, with the purpose of understanding the compositional materials used by Mannis, as well some structural and interpretative aspects of the piece. The analysis revealed the predominance of Smalley’s gestural spectromorphologic category, with fewer textural sections. We recognized yet a large variety of spatial movements, generated by real and virtual sound objects, and that its predominance relates to the title of the work.
